First Meeting
Today saw the first meeting of ladies interested in forming a WI in Linby & Papplewick. Following a campaign of posters, school gate promotion and door to door leaflet drops lots of keen women turned out for the "show your interest" meeting held between 10am and 12 noon at the Papplewick Village Hall.
Helen Rose & Linda Davie (WI Advisers) talked about the structure of the WI and explained what was involved in running one. Meanwhile Michelle Jafaar and Kay Brown (WI Adviser Support) set up a cup cake icing event and explained what other great activities your WI could get involved in - the world is your oyster!

Lapwings Fly The Nest
On 26 June 2014 the official launch of Nottinghamshire's latest WI took place at Papplewick Village Hall. The LAPWINGS represent Linby and Papplewick WI in Nottinghamshire and have already got 38 members in their ranks.
The formal launch meeting was attended by County Chairman Jane Jefferson and her vice chair, Pam Stoddart along with ex-chairman Maureen Ashby. The two members of the WI Support team who have championed the start up of a new WI in the area, Helen Rose (WI Adviser) and Kay Brown (WI Adviser Support) were also there to lend a helping hand. Guests were invited from the neighbouring WIs at Leenside (Hucknall) WI and Bestwood Village WI. A journalist/photographer from the Hucknall & Bulwell Dispatch was also in attendance so look out for our story in the local press.

Beauvale Priory Visit
Instead of our normal monthly evening meeting we had a fascinating trip out to Beauvale Prioryon Thursday 24th July 2014. We met at the Priory on a beautifully hot summers night with day-old baby chicks running around after their mum. We were provided with a wonderful glimpse into the lives of the monks who had inhabited the Priory. We were also fortunate to be able to enter some of the rooms (which they say are haunted!) to get a real feel for what life must have been like for the Monks. Anne, who lives at the Priory, was a great hostess and provided us with an engaging historical talk and tour. This was topped off with a very indulgent cream tea in the tea rooms. All who joined us had a wonderful visit. I for one will definitely be going back soon. Thanks go to Janet Stevenson for organising this and to Julia, our Treasurer, for collecting the money.

Bake-off Is A Winner
Lapwings WI are proud to announce that our very first baking competition was a great success...The Vintage Garden Party & Bake-off raised an amazing £1,811.55.
The Bake-off was a part of our very first community event - "The Vintage Garden Party" - which was held on Sunday 14th September. We had a fantastic afternoon and the weather was very, very kind to us. Check out the photos of the day in our gallery.

Hucknall Christmas Tree Festival
We took part in the 2014 Hucknall Christmas Tree festival at St Mary Magdalene Church. The theme for our tree was everything baking related in honour of the BBC Great British Bake-Off. The decorations ranged from knitted cup cakes to pastry cutters, silk ribbon Christmas puddings to a real sponge Battenberg slice. Atop our tree was of course the "Star Baker".
We were very proud to be judged runners up in the competition at our first attempt. Well done to everyone who took part. More photos in the gallery.

Not One, but Two Christmas Parties
As we have two meetings each month, it was appropriate for us to have two Christmas parties! Many elements were the same for both - guests from neighbouring WI groups, a fuddle, a Secret Santa present and plenty of chatter. Janet produced a seasonal quiz to tax the brain cells of the Tuesday group, whilst the Thursday group played the card game 'Sticky 13'. We all enjoyed our parties.
