The Workhouse Storytellers
For our first meeting of 2017 we were joined by three paupers and the relieving officer from Southwell Workhouse.
Mr Rawlson, the relieving officer, told us about his job, and his family life. He showed us how the inmates arrived at the Workhouse, and how they were categorised once inside. He was also responsible for finding employment for the youngsters once they had reached a suitable age.
Lucy and Sarah told us the stories of how they had been forced to go to live at the workhouse, and gave us some insight into life inside its walls. Samuel sang some songs to tell us about the life and times.
Once the weather improves we hope to visit the Workhouse to see things for ourselves.

Fire Safety
Lapwings had a talk on Valentine's Day from the fire service. The fire safety advice was both interesting and informative. The morning was in the form of a question and answer session which covered such items as smoke alarms (did you know that there were special vibrating ones for the deaf?), keeping yourself safe round the home and what to do in an emergency. Also they emphasised the importance of making an escape plan in case of an emergency. However I've never seen a room empty so quickly at an invitation to 'come and see my machine'!

SOS Fashion Show
Papplewick rivalled Paris for one night when over 100 Lapwings members, friends and visitors from neighbouring WIs joined together to showcase High Street fashion. Miss Mansfield, 16 year old Chloe Adkin joined several Lapwings members to model clothes from selected High Street retailers in a show compered by Gill Harte. Following the show members had an opportunity to browse, try on and purchase from a range of around 1300 items.
A special guest at the show was Councillor John Wilmott who has donated £100 from his charitable fund to Lapwings. President Debbi Perkins said "A lot of hard work went into running the fashion show, but it all proved worthwhile."

Lapwings Craft Fair
Lapwings held another very successful craft fair today. The fair was opened by Miss Mansfield and closed by Nottinghamshire WI President, Jane Jefferson. There were a great variety of crafts on offer from crochet, cards and bears to spring flowers, shabby chic and horseshoes. There were also raffle and tombola stalls run by the members.
The most popular attraction was the Lapwings Kitchen run by Ann Whyte and her team, selling drinks, soup, sausage rolls and cakes. There were also displays from The Lowland Rescue team, based in Papplewick and our own TV star, transplant patient Janet Tilford, on organ donation.
We were very pleased by the feedback from both stallholders and visitors about the friendliness of the event and stallholders are already booking for our next event to be held in November.

Hooked and Prodded Flowers
One of our members, Lynda Kinnard, and two of her friends came to demonstrate, and give us the opportunity to make, flowers from recycled materials using the old fashioned techniques of hooking and prodding strips of fabric into a hessian backing. After much concentration, all were delighted with the poppies and sunflowers which they had produced from one of Lynda's kits.

Easter Treats
Liana Stevens, from Sweet Success in Radford made a return visit to demonstrate several items which would be suitable for Easter Treats. She showed us how to make an Easter egg and other chocolatey items and also how to make a cupcake bouquet. After this members were able to decorate their own cupcake to take home.

Nottinghamshire Federation Annual Meeting
Sixteen Lapwings members attended the County Annual Meeting held at the Royal Concert Hall to hear an inspiring talk by the original Calendar Girl, Angela Knowles. They heard how the death of her husband inspired her and her WI to produce the calendar, which subsequently led to the play, film and now the musical. Most importantly Angela was delighted to announce that with more than £4 million raised leukemia research funded by this had changed the survival rate so that it now stands at 90%.
In the afternoon there was a fascinating talk by Jane Robinson, the author of "A Force To Be Reckoned With", a history of the influence that the WI has had over the last 100 years.
Lapwings members were awarded prizes-
Sheila Hammond for winning the County Scrabble championship,
Janet Broad for being the Lapwings Inspiring Member.
Janet Stevenson for winning the County Prize Draw.

Easter Bonnets and Crafts
A morning of cutting and sticking, icing and decorating and LOTS of concentration, ensured that we had plenty of ideas for Easter crafts to decorate our homes or share with our families.
Lapwings members also took part in an Easter bonnet competition, with Janet Broad being voted the winner for her fabulous hat. Maggie Huckerby was second, with Valerie Catton taking third place. Janet was awarded the prize of an Easter egg by President, Debbi Perkins.

Kurling
An entertaining evening of Kurling was thoroughly enjoyed by all. We had no idea what to expect but really enjoyed the kurling and it was great that everyone could join in. WI advisor, Wendy Richardson, soon overcame our initial reticence, and each match was hotly contested, some with skill and some with good luck!
Well done to the winning team and runners up. The final was a real nail-biting finish, as can be seen from the photo.

The Girls
Almost thirty Lapwings members boarded the coach for a day out in London. On arrival we had trime for a walk to Covent Garden for lunch, and then retraced our steps to the Phoenix Theatre for the afternoon performance of THE GIRLS, the musical based on the Calendar Girls. It was a real rollercoaster of a show, when we laughed and cried together.
Afterwards we were fortunate to meet the actress Joanna Riding, who starred as Annie (pictured centre, next to Janet).

Brooke Farm Summer Fun Day
Lapwings had a great day at Brooke Farm yesterday, selling treats, dog and cat bandanas, toys and other animal-themed items. Thank you so much to everyone who helped in any way - the weather was fabulous all day and we raised a fair amount of money which is great. The stall looked lovely as well.

Lowland Rescue
Members of the Nottinghamshire Lowland Search and Rescue Team visited to tell us more about their work. They gave us an insight into the types of jobs that they may be called to do, and told us of some of the rescues that they had been involved with. NSART is our chosen charity for this year, and we have already donated HiVis jackets to the team.

Southwell Workhouse
Several members visited Southwell Workhouse as a follow up to the excellent talk by the Workhouse Storytellers which the WI had earlier in the year. After a really interesting introductory talk, the members followed the tour round, listening to the tales of the inmates from the past. We were all surprised to hear that the workhouse was still in use in the 1970s.

The Magic of Stained Glass
Rosemary Pike came to our meeting to tell us of her fascinating career in the making of stained glass.
She took us through the history of glass making from its discovery in the eastern Mediterranean, and even showed us examples of the naturally occurring volcanic glass, obsidian. Rosemary went on to show us pictures of the beautiful stained glass church windows created in medieval times.
Bringing the craft up to date Rosemary spoke about how they were actually made, and showing examples of leaded and foiled pieces of glass. Finally she showed us examples of her own commissions, from the paper pattern or cartoon, to the finished article.
Later we had the opportunity to buy some small but beautiful samples of Rosemary's work.

Peter Pan at Newstead Abbey
Some members also enjoyed, or rather survived, the outdoor production of Peter Pan at Newstead Abbey on a very wet evening. The play continued in spite of the rain, whilst a picnic and a few drinks kept the members going.

National Memorial Arboretum
We had a trip to the National Memorial Arboretum in August. After a tour of the area on the land train, members walked around the 300+ memorials, looking at the many different organisations commemorated. Some visited the WI memorial seat, which overlooked the river in one direction and a meadow of wild flowers in the other direction. One of the memorials of particular interest was the new one to the evacuees during the war, as well as the exhibition about the trenches. Each area is set out beautifully with appropriate flowers and shrubs and the day was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone as well as being very thought provoking.

Family History
The first meeting of September was an introduction to Family History by local historian, Maureen Newton. Maureen talked about the many different sources for finding information about your family, if people wish to do their own family tree, from birth certificates to directories, wills and business information, newspapers and death certificates and she illustrated many of these with documents from her own research.

Clinique Evening
We enjoyed an evening of make up hints and tips. This began with a talk from make up technician Melanie Mortimer who explained the professional procedures involved in having your eyebrows enhanced through semi permanent cosmetic and microblading artistry. The ladies were then given the opportunity to watch a makeover by Marta Diaz with WI model, Angela Waldram. Marta explained each stage to the audience and Angela was very pleased with the results. A raffle was held with the prizes being a selection of Clinique products. Everyone also received a colour matched sample of foundation and a goodie bag at the end of the evening.

First Aid with Julie Woodfield
The first meeting of this month was a talk and practical demonstration from Julie Woodfield from the RLSS. She talked through the possible signs for a heart attack or stroke and the latest procedures for CPR, as well as how to use the defibrillator, which is situated outside the hall. Some of the ladies were given the chance to practise on the resuscitation models and everyone felt they had gained some very important information about what to do in an emergency.

Craft Session
At the Thursday meeting everyone was involved in a craft session. Several members brought their sewing machines and around 50 heart shaped cushions were produced for Breast Cancer patients, with a production line of cutting out, sewing and stuffing.
Trauma teddies were also sewn ready to give to the emergency services at Christmas.
Poppies have been knitted and crocheted and these were sewn on to lengths of green cord to contribute to a Curtain of Poppies being made for Wonderwool of Wales, to commemorate the end of WWI.
Twidddlemuffs for dementia patients have also been knitted and these were embellished before being passed on to care homes and the Critical Care and Recovery wards at Nottingham City Hospital.
Other members were also busy on the night preparing items for the LAPWINGS WI Autumn Craft Fair, which will be held on Saturday 18th November.

Tuesday Crafts
The ladies of LAPWINGS WI have been busy again, sewing and stuffing heart shaped cushions which will provide support and comfort for Breast Cancer patients. In October, 50 cushions were made at the Thursday meeting and this week our members at our Tuesday meeting stuffed a further 50 cushions. They will be passed on to the Breast Cancer wards at our local hospitals. This will be an ongoing project as these are always needed.
Several trauma teddies were also finished.

Lapwings Craft Fair
Yet another very successful craft fair was held at the village hall. Over two dozen stalls were located in the main hall selling diverse items from chocolate to cards, items made of fabric, glass, horseshoes, wood and wool and lots more in between. Once again the bag tombola stall proved very popular.
The refreshments proved so popular that we had sold out of soup by 12.30. Luckily there were plenty of cakes.
Our next craft fair will be on March18th.

Shopping Evening with Debenhams
Following the Clinique Evening in October we were invited to a pre Black Friday shopping evening hosted by Debenhams in Doncaster. The invitation was extended to other WI members from Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire. The evening began in the restaurant and then members were free to roam the store, picking up some incredible bargains on the way. All who attended were very impressed with the evening and their purchases, and it is hoped to repeat this twice a year in the future. Thank you to our hosts at Debenhams.

Line Dancing with Lynne Barnard
This was a fun filled evening which gave our members the opportunity to try yet another style of dancing.
After a short introduction to a couple of steps, we were straight in to learning a dance! Over the evening we had the opportunity to learn three different dances, which had a variety of steps. Concentration was required, but soon the rhythm kicked in, leaving us to enjoy the dance. Nowadays the traditional image of line dancing to the 'yee-haw' cowboy music no longer holds, and one of our dances was to the music of Steps!

Jerusalem
No WI has ever recorded a CD of Jerusalem, and so this became the latest challenge for Lapwings.
Debbi, our President, works at Ashfield School, and was able to persuade the music department to help with this, and also had contacts with recording and filming opportunities.
Rehearsals were taken by Elaine Guy. The music was adapted and performed by Thomas Atkins. The recording was made at St Michael's Church, Linby by Matt Vale Illuminos productions, who also took on the remix of the recording. Filming by Alan Wilson and Austin Petch took place at Beauvale Priory and St Michael's Church. The first showing of the DVD was at Beauvale Priory tearooms, where members arrived to a red carpet reception.
Our members have thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to take part in the creation of a pop video and have found the process fascinating.
Jerusalem will be performed at the Radio Nottingham Carol Concert to be recorded in mid December. It can also be downloaded from iTunes. All proceeds will be divided between Lapwings and Ashfield School.
Is our version of Jerusalem going to make it to the Christmas Number One?

Hucknall Christmas Tree Festival
Once again Lapwings entered this festival with a tree kindly donated by Beauvale Priory. Members had been very busy making teddy bears to decorate the tree. These are known as Trauma Teddies and would be donated to the emergency services after the festival to help comfort children who were involved in traumatic incidents.
The tree was awarded third prize at the festival.
Afterwards the teddies were given to the Fire service and the Lowland Rescue Group at the Lapwings Christmas party.

Once again the ladies of Lapwings enjoyed a Christmas meal at Moda restaurant in Hucknall. Everyone enjoyed this social evening, mingling with around 80 members from both the morning and evening groups.
The party again was attended by over 80 members, who enjoyed food and fun for the evening.
We were joined by the Hucknall Fire crew, who collected the trauma teddies. They enjoyed supper with us and joined in the games, before they were saved by a call out!!!
Members of NSART, the lowland rescue service also attended to receive a cheque for £280, proceeds from our latest Craft Fair. They will be using the funds towards thermal imaging equipment to help on night searches.
